Why do many teens feel they are invincible?

Many teens feel as though they cannot be defeated, touched, hurt, killed, etc. Why do they feel this way? Many take risks that are very dangerous such as playing the choking game, trying drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, being involved in extreme sports like snowboarding on mountains with high risks of avalanches. What do you think about this issue?
